Smoke-free Caravan, Summit to Highlight ‘No Smoking’ Celebration PDF Print E-mail
Provincial Health Office head Dr. Samuel Delfin disclosed that the caravan will be conducted all throughout the province here and will end at the municipality of Dumalag.

He explained that this year’s celebration will be hosted by Dumalag town because said local government unit has been the national Red Orchid hall of fame awardee by the Department of Health.

Delfin said that the caravan, set on June 23, will be participated in by the different local government units’ stakeholders and aims to create public awareness on the ill-effects of cigarette smoking.

Top local government and national officials, including those from the DOH, are expected to grace the occasion, he said.

On the other hand, the Roxas City Health Office will be spearheading the No Smoking Summit on June 30 in a mall at Pueblo de Panay here.

According to CHO head Dr. Amelita Robles, the testimonies of successful smoking quitters will be highlighted during said event.

Western Visayas DOH Director Marlyn Convocar and other DOH regional officials will likewise be here for the said activity, she said.

Robles admitted that the enforcement of the No Smoking Ordinance in the city is a challenging work because of the limited number of law enforcers for said ordinance.

However, the CHO will be conducting a series of trainings for the Anti-Smoking Enforcers (ASERs) to include among others barangay officials, students, and other stakeholders to help the city’s Anti-Smoking Task Force in the implementation of the said No Smoking Ordinance.

She said that since the implementation of the ordinance in 2011, a total of 913 individuals was issued citation tickets, 110 of whom have paid the fine while the rest did the community service.

In the recent press conference, Delfin revealed that in 2014, respiratory tract infections to include lifestyle-related incidents such as smoking has been among the top leading causes of morbidity in Capiz.

He said that there is a need for a concerted effort to raise public awareness on the ill-effects of smoking not only to smokers but also to non-smokers. (JSC/JBG-PIA6 Capiz)
