17 Teams Vie for 'Baroto Race' PDF Print E-mail
The competition dubbed “RMN Baroto Race Year 5” is among the highlights of the Capiztahan Celebration 2015 from April 9 to 15 which marks the provincial government’s 114th foundation anniversary.

RMN – Roxas City Special Project and Events head Michelle Oropio said that the competition looks for fishermen who can speedily paddle and maneuver the mobility of their boats. The first racer team to touch the flag at the finish area would be declared as winner.

“Another award for the race will be the Most Tourist Attractive Banca as racers will beautify and design the hull with a tourist come-on of the place they reside,” Oropio noted.

Cash prizes await the winners in both categories.

A “Baroto," Hiligaynon term for boat, is usually made up of wood from different type of trees found in the locality. It has a katig or a wooden framework attached to each side of the boat for support.

The competition has the support of ONE Capiz Foundation, Capiz and Roxas City governments, Philippine Coast Guard – Roxas City Station, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and Roxas City Bantay Dagat.

Baroto race has evolved into a formal competition among Visayas fishermen in 1970 and was usually done during fiestas, promotions and festivals. (AAL/PIA6 Capiz)
