3ID Sends Troops to Secure Papal Visit in Leyte PDF Print E-mail
The 3ID contingent led by Lt. Col. Marion Sison is composed of nine officers and 257 enlisted personnel that will serve as augmentation to the Joint Task Force “POPE” created by the Central Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“The soldiers will conduct security operations and assist in the maintenance of peace and order, to ensure the safety and successful visit of Pope Francis in Tacloban and Palo, Leyte on 17 January 2015,” said a 3ID portal online news.

The Pope will offer a mass near the Tacloban Airport, have lunch with the poor and survivors of natural calamities at the residence of the Archbishop of Palo, bless the Pope Francis Center for the Poor in Palo and visit the Cathedral of Our Lord’s Transfiguration (Palo Cathedral).

3ID commander Maj. Gen. Rey Leonardo B. Guerrero has reminded the troops to maintain a high state of discipline and preparedness prior to the send off ceremony that was conducted by 301st Infantry Brigade commander Col. Eric Uchida.

“In this particular mission, the troops should be ready to thwart any attempt by armed groups to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the activities and ensure the safety and security of the Pope and the general public,” the article noted.

His Holiness Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and his official entourage will be in the country from Jan. 15 to 19 to bring his message of “mercy and compassion” to at least 11 different venues in the province of Leyte and Metro Manila. (AAL/PIA6 Capiz)
