ROXAS CITY, Capiz (June 25) -- Health officials continue their efforts to save more Capiceños especially the young ones from the ills of smoking.
Provincial Health Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control Program Coordinator June Regalado explains the local government units’ intensive campaign to make a difference in the drive against smoking.

She said that various initiatives are put in place, such as the passing and strict enforcement of the smoke-free ordinance by the different local government units (LGUs) in Capiz, which has gained national recognition and awards.

For the second year now, Roxas City has been recognized by the Department of Health for its no-nonsense drive and initiatives against smoking, thus complying with the requirements set by the agency.

This year also, the Municipality of Dumalag received the same prestigious Red Orchid award, while the municipality of Panay last year garnered the Pink Orchid Award for placing second in the said competition.

Regalado said the establishment of the Smoking Cessation Clinic at the Roxas City Health Office also helped those who opted to quit smoking and participate in the anti-smoking drive.

Recently, the province of Capiz has launched another anti-smoking drive, known as “Sponge” campaign, in partnership with the DOH and the World Lung Foundation (WLF).

She pointed out that the campaign aims to inform the public about the serious health impact and dangers of tobacco use that will eventually motivate Capiceños to stop smoking.

Aside from continuous and intensive inter-personal communication, local radio and television networks were tapped to help in the advocacy.

According to Regalado, Capiz is one of the eight provinces nationwide that is being piloted by the DOH and WLF because of being one of the model LGUs for tobacco control in the Philippines.

Other pilot provinces in the country include Misamis Occidental, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Oriental Mindoro, Nueva Viscaya, Negros Oriental, and Agusan del Sur.

The "Sponge" campaign is part of the Capiz province’s activities for the No Smoking Month celebration this June. (JCM/JBG/PIA6-Capiz)
