ROXAS City (Feb 15)— Mayor Angel Alan Celino and some councilors recently held a consultative meeting with businessmen here to gather suggestions on what future projects can be carried out in the city.
Officials and members of the following organizations attended the meeting:
* Capiz Halaran Chamber of Commerce and Industry under its president, Dale Bernas
* Roxas City Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry under Leny Albert Apaitan
* Provincial Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Council under Danny So Chan
* Capiz Visitors and Convention Bureau under its chair, Cora Tiangco; and
* Joint Chambers of Commerce of Capiz under Executive Director Jose Nery “Bubbles” Ong.
Bernas said new road networks can be opened to decongest traffic in some areas in the metropolis.
He suggested the opening of a new access road from Gaisano-Martelino compound to Mabini Street; Tanque Ilaya to Capricho II; and from St. Francis Park Subdivision to West Lake Subdivision in Brgy. Dayao.
The Halaran Chamber also suggested the relocation of electrical post in front of Novo Commercial on Arnaldo Boulevard, and the rounding of the corner for a smooth traffic flow.
Gerry Olson, former president of the Rotary Club of Metro Roxas, said taxi and tricycle fares from the airport to any destination in the city should be fixed, as there are “opportunist drivers” who “overcharge” their passengers.
On the other hand, Apaitan said a 24/7 hotline should be established here. He also suggested the installation of closed-circuit television cameras in select areas in the city.
Celino said the city government is considering the suggestions of the businessmen. He also assured transparency when the projects are already being carried out.
The business sector was also impressed with the city government’s high tax collection.
During the meeting, Carmen Andrade, the Office of the Mayor’s consultant on business taxes, said the city’s total tax collection on January 1–30, 2012 totaled to P42,854,740.72.
The city collected P26,165,872 during the same period last year, while it gathered P21,126,198 in 2010, Andrade said.
Meanwhile, Celino said the Roxas City Police Station in Brgy. Lawaan will be completed this year.
The jeepney and bus terminal will be transferred from Km.1 to Brgy. Lawaan also this year, he said./P
