ROXAS CITY, Capiz (Oct. 22) -- More than 2,000 athletes, coaches and trainers from48 colleges and universities in the entire country have already confirmed to attend this year’s Philippine University Games (UniGames) in Capiz.
Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion College Rector Msgr. Vicente Hilata said that so far, 2,200 athletes and other school officials throughout the Philippines will be in Capiz for the week-long sports activities from October 22 to 29.
Hilata said with the support of the different private schools in Capiz, including the Capiz State University and the Roxas City and provincial governments, all systems are already in place for the national event here.
He added that 13 sport events will be played for this year’s UniGames, namely, athletics, badminton, swimming, volleyball, basketball, chess, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, sepak takraw, football, softball and beach volleyball.
UniGames Pres. Roger Banzuela, on the other hand, revealed that while the games for some sports events will start in the morning of October 23, the formal opening program will be done at 5 o’clock in the afternoon of the same date at the Villareal Stadium.
Banzuela said the hosting of the UniGames in Capiz will help promote Roxas City and the province as a sports tourism destination in the country.
On the other hand, Capiz Police Provincial Director Domingo Cabillan said they are on full alert for the week-long activities here.
He pointed out that additional police officers from their PNP Regional Office will be coming over to augment the police force in the province to ensure peace and security during the event.
