ROXAS City (Oct 04)— Some 300 broadcast media practitioners in Capiz have spearheaded the planting of mangrove seedlings along a two-kilometer stretch of Cadimahan River in Brgy. Tanque here.
Led by Radio Mo Nationwide dyVR-Roxas City station manager Elizer Abarra, chapter president of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Capiz, the participants planted some 5,000 seedlings in the area considered as one of the city’s tourist attractions.
The activity dubbed as “Oplan Broadcastreeing” is in support to the National Greening Program as embodied in Executive Order No. 26 issued in February this year, Abarra said.
He said it was held in response to the problem on deforestation that usually results to flashfloods and landslides, among others, during heavy rains.
“We will also advocate on protecting every seedling planted during the activity” to ensure the mangroves’ growth, he said.
The tree planting was held in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of the Interior and Local Government, city and provincial governments, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police and some schools.
Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas and Councilor Powell Del Rosario provided the broadcasters and their respective volunteers with the mangrove seedlings.
Also present were Councilor Teresa Almalbis, Roxas City Bureau of Fire Protection chief Kenneth Lester Gemotea, City Coastal Resource Management chief Belinda Garrido, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources officer Dionesio Molina Jr. and Provincial Risk-Reduction and Management Council chief Esperedion Pelaez.
