ROXAS City (Aug 22) — For the first time, Capiz — through the Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion (CPC) — will host this year’s 16th Philippine Sports Commission-University Games (UniGames) on October 22–29.
Msgr. Vicente Hilata, CPC college rector, said some 2,000 athletes, coaches, trainers and sports coordinators and officials from about 50 public and private colleges and universities in the country are expected to participate in the event.
A press conference was held the other day at the CPC College Rector’s Office to update the media on the status of the preparation for the sports event that is seen to boost the province’s tourism.
Since many people are attending the event, hotels and lodging houses here have already been fully- booked, Hilata said.
CPC and UniGames President Roger Banzuela also signed a memorandum of agreement on the event.
The sports events to be held in the UniGames are athletics, badminton, swimming, volleyball, basketball, chess, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, sepak takraw, football, softball and beach volleyball.
Billiards, one of the popular sports in the country, will be added as another event, according to Banzuela.
With the aim of standardizing tournaments under its supervision, the PSC will finance the event. The Commission has always been tapped for funding assistance in sports competition like this.
Technical officials of the UniGames will conduct an ocular inspection of the venues in the province on September 2.
Gov. Victor Tanco and Mayor Angel Alan Celino pledged their support to the tertiary sports competition.
According to Banzuela, the event is a tie-up activity led by CPC in cooperation with the Filamer Christian University, Hercor College and the St. John La Salle-Roxas.
