City Council Commends Student For Winning In Intíl Science Fair
ROXAS City (July 15)— The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) has recently passed a resolution commending a student of Capiz National High School (CNHS) whose research study won in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2011.
Angeli Joyce Yap Dy has “(exemplified) the global competitiveness and excellence of the Capiznon youth in the field of scientific research,” said the resolution authored by Councilor Teresa Almalbis.
Dy, 16, landed on fourth place in the fair’s Biochemistry Category for her research on milkfish serum as an alternative supplement for the culture of A549 (human lung) and HCT (colon) carcinoma.
She was awarded by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.
The resolution cited said Section 10 of the 1987 Constitution, which provides that science and technology are essential for development and progress, and the mandate of the state to give priority to research and development, invention and their utilization.
In 2009, Dy also won second place in the same competition for her project titled “Study of the Cytotoxicity Against Human Lung and Colon Carcinomas, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Potentials of Milkfish Bile.”
“While the international recognition received by Dy highlights the excellent potentials of the Filipino youth and provides another source of inspiration to our whole nation, it should also prompt the government to advance its effort in the development of scientific research and education in our country,” the resolution added.
Excellent education was provided by the CNHS through its principal Nestor dela Cruz and coach/tutor Ronilo Ponte, the resolution said.
Dy’s parents, businessman Joseph Dy and pharmacist Mary Joy Yap-Dy, morally and financially supported the student as they accompany her to trips to laboratories in Manila and Iloilo while conducting her research./PN
