‘100% Smoke-Free’ Roxas City Cited
ROXAS City (June 7) – The Department of Health (DOH) awarded this city with the Red Orchids Award for being “100 percent tobacco-free.”
The award was personally received by Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas and City Health Officer Amelita Robles on May 31 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Pasig City.
“The victory of the city government is also the victory of the people of Roxas City,” he said.
The city government is strictly enforcing its ordinance against smoking in public places.
For his part, Mayor Angel Alan Celino congratulated Councilor Powell del Rosario, chairman of he Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Rules and Ordinances, and Councilor Erlyn Lim, chairman of the Committee on Health.
Since the implementation of anti-smoking ordinance, the City Health Task Force Against Smoking apprehended 74 violators.
Most of them paid the correspondent fines, the mayor said.
The city government also created the Smoking Association Clinic (SAC) intended for those who want to quit smoking.
The city is also a strong contender in the forthcoming ‘Regional Seal of Good Housekeeping’ by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The standards and requirements of a 100-percent tobacco-free environment are strict. Among these are:
* enforcement of tobacco control policies
* provision of information and education to warn people about the hazards of smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke; and
* delivery of smoking cessation services, among others./PN
